Frequently Asked Questions
This is free? What's the catch?
While Nation of Neighbors is currently a free service, is does cost money to provide. There are servers to pay for, bandwidth, printing, phones, staff, travel costs…
We’re hopeful that, if you find Nation of Neighbors helpful, you’ll consider becoming a supporting member. Supporting memberships are currently $24.00 per year. In return for your support, we’ll send you some cool stickers, let you associate multiple locations with your account and add a fancy border to your profile photo so that everyone in your community knows that you make Nation of Neighbors possible.
We also offer high quality Neighborhood Watch signs and promotional materials to help you promote Neighborhood Watch in your community. While you are free to purchase your signs wherever you like, Nation of Neighbors signs show our web address and advertise the fact that your Neighborhood Watch is different. Our signs are pretreated with graffiti protection and include special tamper resistant mounting screws. Our signs are also available customized (for a minimum order of 10 signs) and are printed locally. Your purchase helps support Nation of Neighbors.
We’re also investigating other alternatives for supporting Nation of Neighbors including local advertising from carefully screened local businesses, corporate sponsorships and potential business partnerships. While we hope to keep Nation of Neighbors available free permanently we may consider an annual group membership fee for HOAs or Community Associations if necessary.
We do appreciate your donations. While it is our intention to run Nation of Neighbors as a not-for-profit business, we are not currently recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization and donations are not deductible for income tax purposes.
Please know that we will never sell, trade or otherwise share your personal information, individually, in aggregate or otherwise.
Doesn't someone else already do this?
No. There are many websites that facilitate anonymous reporting of crimes or tips. There are also many sites that publish crime data, ranging from individual local government and department websites to large sites like crimereports.com. There are currently no other sites that combine the unique set of tools and experience offered by Nation of Neighbors.
Where does Nation of Neighbors fit in with Twitter, Facebook, etc.?
Police Departments and citizens groups around the world are quickly discovering the benefits of social networking. Nation of Neighbors seeks to extend the idea of social networking into the realm of social participation. Rather than a virtual community you are connected to your real local community, in real-time, no matter where in the world you happen to be.
