Further info: I spoke with FDLE regarding the sexual offender in the area (see notice from earlier today). I was told that the address is correct and that the offender stays in his car in that warehouse area at night because of the rules regarding offenders living in proximity to schools. You may recall a couple of years ago the issues regarding offenders being housed under the Julia Tuttle causeway because of these same rules.

Hello Neighbors,

I want to make everyone aware of a situation that I encountered a couple of weeks ago.

My mother-in-law accidentally set off the alarm at my house and I received a call from the alarm company at work. I was unable to contact anyone at the house and authorized the alarm company to dispatch the police. When the alarm company contacted the police they were told that I was on a "NO RESPONSE" list and the police did not respond to the call. Ultimately I was able to get in contact with my mother-in-law and confirm that everything was OK at home.

Afterwards I contacted the Miami-Dade Police Department and was directed to the Miami-Dade County False Alarm Enforcement Unit. I was informed that I was placed on the list because I had failed to renew my alarm registration with the county. The representative that I spoke with claimed that renewal forms were sent out but never received back. I never received a notice and had no idea that my address had been placed on this list.

Afterwards I spoke with my friend Norman over at Killian Place to tell him about the situation. Out of curiosity, he called the False Alarm Enforcement Unit to check on his own address and found that he was set to expire at the end of October and would have been placed on the list due to a non-renewal back in May. He also never received a renewal form but was told by the clerk that it was sent three separate times. The Clerk at the False Alarm Enforcement Unit was kind enough to email his form so that he could renew immediately.

You may want to check to see if you are on the list... it seems that there might be a problem with the renewal process.

Here's a link to the ordinance and to their website:

"Failure to register your alarm system or pay any outstanding fines will place the concerned location on No Response; the Miami-Dade Police Department will no longer respond to audible and silent intrusion alarms. They will continue to respond to hold-up, ambush, panic, and silent duress."

One last item: If you read through the Ordinance you'll find the following:

"A notice that Police response will be discontinued, for any of the above reasons, will accompany a civil violation notice, be posted at the affected location, or be sent to the user by certified mail at least thirty (30) days prior to discontinuing service."

I inquired regarding the certified mail and was told that this process was discontinued because of the cost to the county. I was also told that contacting my County Commissioner would be the best course of action if I needed to inquire further.

I received this notice yesterday from the Florida Offender Alert System regarding a sexual offender in our area. According to the flyer, the victim was under 12. There was also a case against him for failing to notify the Sheriff of a relocation to another jurisdiction.

What's unusual is that if you map the address you'll find that the address is for the warehouses just to the south of Killian Pines which is not a residential area.

I posted a comment on public street lights and three persons have responded about gates.
My immediate neighbors and I are not keen on gates. The cost would be great and the maintenance fee a burden.
Once the street is closed to public access it is not considered public anymore and the neighborhood would have to pay repairs, etc. besides getting the proper permit for the County to allow it will require legal fees.
I get many visitors and that means that during a party or family gathering I would have to post guard by the gates to allow them in since automatic opening from each house would be astronomically expensive, and therefore not an option.

Working with the break-in victim and the camera owner we now have four video clips of the crime as it progresses. These are available for download and viewing on the killianpines.org site. You can clearly see the thieves as they travel through the neighbors back yard and then later as they leave the house and throw their latex gloves into the bushes nearby. The video clips also show the car when it returns to pick up the stolen items and the same car as it leaves the area.

The video clips are in .AVI format and I've found that not everyone is able to play them. If Windows Media Player doesn't work, you might want to tru using the free Videolan VLC player.

If you're still having trouble post a comment and we can work out getting the videos into another format that works better.

When I first moved to Killian Pines 20 years ago, I went to the Government building at Cutler Ridge and inquired regarding public street lights for the area. I was told that I needed to collect the signatures of at least 75% of people living in the area to start the ball rolling.
Since I worked nights and was told that our taxes would go up like 13% I gave up on the idea, but since lately we have a great deal of suspicious vehicles roaming around and my vehicle was broken into to steal my radio at the beginning of the year, perhaps it is time to reconsider the cause again.
I'll appreciate any input.

Through the help of neighbors, we have been able to determine quite a bit of information regarding the burglary today. The car appears to be a silver Toyota Corolla and the suspects are two black males. The first suspect was wearing an orange t-shirt, jean shorts and black sneakers. The second supects was wearing a black t-shirt and jeans.

The timeline is as follows:

10:39 AM The car drives by from north to south.
10:40 AM The car returns from south to north
10:44 AM Two suspects walk by from south to north and drop latex gloves in the bushes. Additional latex gloves were found by the house.
10:45 AM The car follows south to north

Approxmately an hour later the same car returns. We suspect this was to pick up the stolen items.

11:51 AM The car returns from the south and turns around directly in front of the house.
11:53 AM The car cirles the block and returns again (north to south)
11:55 AM The car appears again traveling from south to north, this time with the driver's rear door partially open and with what appears to be one of the stolen items showing.

We've attached several pictures in the hopes that someone in the neighborhood will be able to spot the car.

Starting May 1, 2010, Miami will start enforcing a county-wide teen curfew. Parents could face fines if their kids are repeatedly caught out after 11 p.m. without a valid reason.

Children under 17 years old will not be allowed to be out in the city past 11:00 p.m., Sundays through Thursdays. The curfew for Fridays and Saturdays is midnight. Those who violate the curfew will receive two warnings; on the third citation, the parents of the curfew violator will be issued a fine of up to $500. According to officials, there are exceptions to the ordinance: children who are with their parents at the time the curfew begins and teenagers who work late hours. In addition, those who violate the curfew will not be arrested, but will be brought home or taken to a police station until their parents can pick them up.

The Neighborhood Watch Coordination meeting was held last night and was led by Alina Lopez from Citizens'/Youth Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County ( http://www.citizenscrimewatch.org ) and Officer Javier Aluart from Miami-Dade Police Department. Approximately 35 residents were in attendance from Pinetree Village as well as the surrounding Killian Pines areas.

Alina indicated that the training at the previous meeting on how to report suspicious activity was working based on the data from the police 'grid run'. Special thanks were given to Maria and to the block captains from Pinetree Village.

Alina presented Pinetree Village with five Citizens' Crime Watch Signs which will be posted at the main entrances to the area. Congratulations to the residents of Pinetree Village for their efforts in organizing, meeting and getting their signs!

Officer Aluart reviewed the grid run data and indicated that there were two break-ins during the month of March, both in Pinetree Village. The good news is that the area is no longer considered a hot-spot. Despite criminal activity being down overall, the police are still conducting weekly burgulary sweeps using unmarked vehicles. I'm going to speak with Officer Aluart this week to see if we can summarize some of the grid run data onto the website.

We currently have 36 members on the Nation of Neighbors (killianpines.org) site and we need to continue to get the word out in order to cover the remaining areas within Killian Pines. Please take the time to speak with your neighbors and ask them to sign up - membership is free and open to everyone in the area, including Pinetree Village and the other townhomes. Once our numbers increase a bit the plan is to bring Aliana and Javier back out for a Killian Pines meeting.
